Rob Brendle: Habbakuk’s Lament

I awoke this morning to the news that more than fifty people are dead. Last night’s assault in Las Vegas was the deadliest mass shooting in our nation’s history. It’s bewildering, heartbreaking, infuriating. To our south, Puerto Rico is undone by the latest storm. On the other side of the world, North Korea is escalating it’s belligerent rhetoric while Iran hurtles toward nuclear capability. How can this be? I look at the world around me and find myself deeply identifying with the prophet Habakkuk: “Wherever I look, I see destruction and violence.” As he did then, so now I find myself crying out Why, Lord? As some of our nation’s most sensitive issues find public voice once more—this time with all eyes on athletes and the national anthem—the cable news rancor reaches a fever pitch.
